One practical factor specific to this part of the Home Counties is ground condition: Hertfordshire's shrink-swell clay soils, particularly pronounced around St Albans and Hitchin, are a recognised contributor to structural movement and cracking in older buildings, which makes an accurate diagnosis (movement versus routine settlement versus a genuinely different cause) especially important before committing to any structural or masonry repair in this area. Vernacular features across the county's older stock, steep-pitched clay tile roofs, exposed timber frames, lime-based renders and mortars, are broadly consistent with what we see across the rest of our coverage area, but the combination of dense historic market-town cores and this specific geology is a genuinely local factor worth flagging on a Hertfordshire project from the outset.
