What Are Breathable Paint Systems?
Breathable paint systems use natural, vapour-permeable formulations, typically lime wash, silicate (mineral) paint, or breathable emulsions specifically designed for lime and other traditional substrates, instead of standard modern vinyl or acrylic paint, which forms a semi-sealed film across the wall surface. On a period property finished in lime plaster or render, breathable paint is what allows the whole wall system to continue working as it was designed to.
Why It Matters
Painting a lime-finished wall with standard modern emulsion undoes much of the benefit of using lime in the first place, the paint film traps moisture at the surface, which can cause blistering, flaking, and in more serious cases pushes moisture problems back into the wall itself. This is a mistake we see constantly on properties that have had excellent lime plastering work undone by the wrong choice of paint at the final stage, often by a decorator brought in separately who wasn't told what was underneath.

What to Know Before You Start.
Lime wash for the most traditional, breathable finish; silicate (mineral) paint where a more durable, low-maintenance breathable option is preferred; and breathable emulsions formulated specifically for lime substrates where a smoother modern appearance is wanted without sacrificing permeability.
Paint colour on the exterior of listed buildings, particularly in conservation areas, can be subject to planning or listed building restrictions, especially where colour is considered part of a terrace's or street's historic character. We'll flag this where it's likely to apply.
A single room is typically completed within a few days; external work depends on facade size and weather conditions, since lime wash and mineral paints have specific temperature and moisture requirements for application. We schedule external decoration around suitable weather windows rather than a fixed calendar date.
Paint is often treated as the least important part of a lime plastering or rendering project, brought in as an afterthought, but the wrong paint can undo the benefit of correctly specified lime work underneath it.
