Restoring Greenwich's Georgian and Victorian Heritage
Six of Greenwich's conservation areas, including Ashburnham Triangle, East Greenwich, West Greenwich and Shrewsbury Park Estate, carry Article 4 directions removing permitted development rights for window and door replacement and re-roofing, meaning full planning permission is needed for changes that might otherwise proceed without it. Properties within the World Heritage Site and its buffer zone face heightened scrutiny for any visible change, and the council works directly with Historic England on significant applications affecting the site or its setting. Charlton Village, a separate pocket within the borough, has its own distinct character, a medieval street pattern around the Jacobean mansion of Charlton House, quite different from the Georgian and Victorian terraces that dominate elsewhere in Greenwich. That variation means the right conservation approach genuinely depends on which part of the borough a property sits in.
